11:13 am - Happy New Year

Another year is come and gone.  Another year of not feeling like much actually happened.  Funny how that works, isn’t it?

09:03 am - On the creative process, post-post-meridian

So I had dinner last night, then I found out that the Derby for this week (the new vintage) is both ridiculously fun and ridiculously wide open. So I did up a design in honor of one of my favorite vintage television shows. I wasn’t too happy with the black background, but it was midnight and I couldn’t see a way around it.

Than for some reason, I just had to do a send-up for one of the most infamous quotes that never happened. That, of course, made it 3AM. Then I was really exhausted and finally went to sleep.

This morning, I woke up and realized that I could use a yellow background as easily as a black one. Ah. And then it was pointed out to me that I got the quote wrong. Oops. So I really shouldn’t Derby after midnight, it seems.

Despite this, both designs had more votes by the time I woke up than any of my previous entries. (7 & 8!) I probably shouldn’t be so excited about seven votes, but it made me happy.

So now I’m off to finish making lunch, clean some, and maybe this afternoon work on the souvenir shirt design I’m thinking of…

12:45 am - I swear, this is copied word-for-word.

Man found dead in KFC drive-through

A man was found dead Wednesday morning at a Kentucky Fried Chicken drive-through lane in Columbia.

Columbia police and the Richland County coroner are trying to identify of the man, said Brick Lewis, a spokesman for the Columbia Police Department.

Employees of the KFC on Taylor Street found a car blocking the drive-through lane when they arrived for work around 9:15 a.m., Lewis said. The man behind the wheel was not responsive so the restaurant workers called 911.

Foul play is suspected.

Ugh.

07:38 pm - The incredible inedible $20 book scanner, Part 1

StumbleUpon is a horrible, horrible invention that takes up far too much of my time far too much of the time. And after it helped me find http://www.diybookscanner.org/, it was trending toward taking my money, too. I think I like the idea of a book scanner and digitizing my library. Easier for trips. Easier for access. And the effort involved in moving my rather substantial library 4 1/2 times in the last five years is a real incentive for going digital.

The problem is, I love books. The feel of them. The smell of them. The lack of backlighting of them. So whether or not I will actually be able to switch to a digital library, I have no idea.

So we’ll get to discussing New Year’s Resolutions later, but suffice to say for now that one of mine is to actually finish all of the projects I have started last year before starting any new ones. The book scanner just squeaked into that category. But I also don’t want to sink a bunch of money into something if I don’t know for sure that I’ll really use it. So I decided to give myself a strict budget of $20. And tonight I see that it’s actually going to work. And this is how I did it.

I wanted my Google Voice number to be 4-weston, but it’s not available. For-west is, but I’ve been avoiding the nickname lately. I dunno…

08:49 am - Polymath

From Ancient Greek πολυμαθής (polumathēs), “having learned much”; from πολύς (polus), “much” + μανθάνω (manthanō), “I learn”.

During a conversation at work yesterday, I quickly made a list of all the fields I’ve experimented with. The list intrigued even me. And this is just off the top of my head.

Things I have done that turned out relatively well and with which I consider myself relatively competent (or at least better than average):

  • Computer programming
  • Web design and layout
  • Sculpting
  • Painting (pictures and miniatures)
  • Writing
  • Drawing
  • Photography
  • Game design (board, card, miniature, and roleplaying)
  • Cooking
  • Baking
  • Sushi making
  • Gardening
  • Electronics crafting
  • Woodworking

And the list of things I’d really like to try, given the equipment and space:

  • Microcontroller programming
  • Robotics
  • Gear design and fabrication
  • Clockmaking
  • Joinery & box making
  • Balloon/rocket photography

This is why I need a house with a garage.
